A construction worker from Racine was killed in a construction accident in Somers on Wednesday. He was working in a trench when there was a cave in and he became trapped. The victim was 52-years-old. The worksite is the scene of a future shopping center at Highway 31 and County Highway S.

Rescue teams worked feverishly to free the man," the Kenosha Sheriff's Department said in a statement. "However their efforts were hampered by unstable conditions at the scene."

Steve Krause, Somers fire chief, described the scene as "chaotic" during the rescue efforts.

The victim had been working at laying sewer pipes. The accident is being investigated by the local authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
