Report details fatal workplace injuries in 2005

A report this month from The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows a decline in the number of fatal occupational injuries in the U.S. during the year 2005.

The report is based on data that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) collected from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI).

For 2005, BLS reported a total of 5,702* work-related fatal injuries and a rate of 4.0 deaths per 100,000 workers; compared with 1992, this represents an 8% decline in the number of deaths (from 6,217 in 1992) and a 23% decline in the fatality rate (from 5.2 in 1992).

The report shows that highway incidents are the leading causes of workplace fatality.

While there are still a high number of deaths, the decline represents an effort by OSHA, private companies and local governments to help make workplaces safer.
