Eye injuries in the workplace may be caused by a number of factors, including an unsafe environment, an employee's lack of training or failure to follow proper safety practices.

An article on OccupationalHazards.com offers advice on how to improve safety in the workplace and prevent eye injury among workers.

In one case, a 24-year-old worker lost his left eye when a pallet when a co-worker swung it around while stacking it up. The injured worker lost his eye in the accident because of his failure to wear protective glasses and failure to follow proper safety procedures.

An occupational safety expert notes the following tips for managers and supervisors to promote eye safety:

Perform a facility eye safety analysis.
Test for employee vision problems.
Choose light, well-fitting glasses.
Establish a 100 percent mandatory eye protection program throughout the entire plant.
Plan for emergencies by having first aid procedures, eyewash stations and trained personnel.
Train and educate on an ongoing basis.
