A man buried in a construction accident in St. Clair County on Tuesday, is now listed in serious condition at UAB Hospital.

The man was using a backhoe to move dirt at an auto salvage yard on Old Coal City Road when portions of the dirt wall collapsed and buried him inside the cab of the backhoe.

Rescuers arrived on the scene and it took them nearly two hours to dig him out.

He was airlifted to UAB Hospital for treatment of his injuries. No further information is available at this time.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction accidents account for over 400,000 injuries each year.

Alabama Man Falls in Construction Accident

A contractor fell from an Alabama water tower while he was painting it. The construction accident happened outside of Hurtsboro on Wednesday evening. There were three other contractors painting with him when he fell.

Officials in the Russell County Sheriff's Department say at this point they do not think foul play was involved in the incident.

"He was being suspended from a rope on top of the water tower in the harness and it appears that there might have been some malfunction of the equipment that caused the fall," said Lieutenant Heath Taylor, investigator for the Russell County Sheriff's Department.

The 28-year-old victim was from Marion County and was employed by B&H Paint Company. His coworkers tried to rescue him and break his fall, but they were unable to do so. The accident is being investigated by local officials as well as officials from the Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Four Injured in Louisiana Construction Accident

Four men working at Trunkline LNG installing pipeline were injured on Monday. The construction accident happened when some scaffolding gave way. Early reports said there was a fire or explosion at the scene.

Despite those early and incorrect rumors of an explosion, Barnett says what did happen inside the plant was taken just as seriously. Around 2:15 this afternoon, he says, the scaffolding the contract construction workers used somehow gave way, and Acadian Ambulance was called to take the victims to area hospitals.

"We make sure that all the contract employees undergo terminal safety training before they start the work. We do everything we possibly can to keep this from happening," says Barnett.

Two of the men were treated and released. A third is listed in stable condition and the fourth is listed in critical condition. The accident is being investigated by local authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It is unknown why the scaffolding collapsed.

Crane Operator Injured in Omaha Construction Accident

A construction worker was injured when the 140,000 pound crane he was operating slipped into the Papio Creek. He was trapped inside of the cab for over an hour while rescue crews worked to get him out. The construction accident happened on Friday morning at the site on 67th and West Center Road.

Slippery pads on the crane may have contributed to it tipping over.

Papio Creek's water will not be tainted from the accident, that's the conclusion from the initial investigation.

"I don't think it's going to have much of an impact at all because everything seems to be contained within the crane itself as far as diesel and oil and stuff, nothing's actually spilled out of it," said Doug Fauble of Eco-Solutions.

Rescue workers needed to use the jaws of life in order to rescue the man. He is in a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. His condition is listed as fair. The construction accident is being investigated by the local authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

If you would like to read more about construction accidents, please visit InjuryBoard's Workplace Injury Information page.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann
