7 People die in firey crash

Recently in Montgomery County, Ala., a fiery head-on collision between an 18-wheeler
and 16-passenger van killed one Alabama Department of Corrections employee and six
applicants for prison jobs. The accident happened in a rural area near Union Springs, Ala.
A report on FoxNews.comquoted Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright, who went to the
scene, as saying, “The crash was horrendous enough, but the fire added to the tragedy.”
All seven people killed were between the ages of 18 and 45. State Trooper John Reese
told the news agency, “It was a very high-impact crash.”

According to a progress report released Dec. 31, 2007 by the Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration, in 2006 there were 4,995 people killed in accidents involving
large trucks and 106,000 injured. Crashes involving large trucks, like 18-wheelers, and
smaller vehicles are usually a catastrophic event because of the weight difference and, of
course, speed is also a factor. A fully loaded 18-wheeler can weigh up to 80,000 lbs. The
average 16-passenger van weighs between 4,500-6,000 lbs. The average car weighs about
3,000 lbs.

The trucking industry plays a vital role in transporting important commodities like
construction supplies, machinery, food and other consumer goods to local markets. It also
has the huge responsibility of making sure that its drivers are operating under optimum
conditions and that their trucks are properly maintained. Given a commercial freight
vehicle’s weight and size, passengers in smaller vehicles stand just about no chance of
survival in a collision.

Pennslyvania Woman Killed by Dump Truck

A woman driving a car on a Pennsylvania road was killed after being struck by a dump truck. The trucking accident happened in Whitemarsh Township last week. She swerved into the other lane and the driver of the dump truck was unable to avoid a collision.

The dump truck driver said he did not have enough time to react because he did not see Dancona until he reached the top of the hill. The drivers tried to swerve away from each other but still could not avert the crash, according to the witnesses.

The victim died at the scene. It is unknown why her car went into the other lane. The driver of the dump truck was injured and taken to a local hospital. The police are investigating the accident and toxicology testing is being performed.

Trucking Accident Kills One in Caldwell

A woman was killed in a trucking accident in Caldwell early this morning. The accident happened on Highway 55 between Farmway Road and 10th Avenue. The victim was driving a minivan.

Deputies say it appears the driver of the van didn't see the truck as she pulled out onto Highway 55 from Ashland Drive and was broad sided by the semi. Idaho State Police say the woman driving the vehicle was killed in the crash.

It is unknown why the victim pulled out into traffic in front of the semi-truck. The police are still investigating the accident. Traffic was blocked on the Highway for several hours while they investigated and the scene was cleaned up. There were no other reported injuries.

Log Truck Overturns in Mortar Creek

A semi-truck hauling logs from Reeltown to Prattville overturned on Friday, spilling logs all over the road. The trucking accident happened at the intersection of Alabama Highway 14 and Coosada Parkway.

With the aid of responding Alabama State Troopers, CoosaÂda Parkway was closed to traffic while the logs were removed and the truck could be uprightÂed.
"I'm not surprised this hapÂpened," Wright said. "These guys take these turns quick -- especially coming off (Highway) 14 onto Coosada Parkway. Their loads shift and the vehicle gets out of control."

The truck driver claims he was not going faster than 5 mph when he turned the corner. He remembers that he heard a loud pop and felt the load of logs shift. Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the accident. No one was injured. It took several hours to clean up the roadway and reopen it to traffic.

Loxley Trucking Accident Kills Three

Three people were killed in a trucking accident on Friday evening. The accident happened near Loxley on Alabama Highway 59. Three people were traveling in a car when they collided with a tractor-trailer.

The driver,

64, of Benton, Maine, apparently pulled his car onto the highway into the path of a southbound Freightliner tractor-trailer at about 7 p.m.The truck struck the car on the driver side, they said.

His wife and the backseat passenger were also killed in the accident. The driver of the truck was hurt and taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. The two people in the front seats of the car were wearing their seat belts. The backseat passenger was not. The accident is being investigated by the state police.

Trucking Accident Kills Alabama Man

A trucking accident in Oregon killed a 23-year-old man from Alabama on Tuesday morning. He was driving an SUV on Highway 58 when he was hit by a semi-truck after crossing the center line. The semi-truck burst into flames after the collision. A good samaritan rescued the driver of the semi-truck. He is at the hospital.

Investigation determined that the deceased drove a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and was rounding a sweeping left curve when his SUV crossed into the path of an oncoming 2002 Freightliner pulling a flatbed trailer

It is unknown why the driver of the SUV crossed the center line but it is believed that speed was a factor. The police are still investigating the accident which closed the highway for several hours on Tuesday. No one else was involved or injured in the trucking accident.

Tractor Trailer Drives Onto Pickup Truck in Alabama

A man is amazed that he escaped serious injury in Alabama after his pickup truck was driven over by an 18-wheeler. The trucking accident happened on Route 65 on Monday. The man suffered some slight injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Foro, 59, recalled seeing the windshield crack and the roof begin to crumple. Before he could react, the month-old trailer he was carting and most of his pickup truck had been crushed by an out-of-control semi that barreled down on top of him, Foro said.

The accident is being investigated by the local police department. It is unknown why the tractor trailer was out of control and drove onto the pickup truck and trailer.

Thomasville Man Killed in Trucking Accident

A 24-year-old man from Thomasville was killed in a trucking accident on Highway 19 in Mississippi. He was driving a pickup truck and he was hit by an 18-wheeler. He died on the scene from his injuries. The 18-wheeler was based out of Montgomery.

Shreds of rubber from at least three blown tires on the flat bed trailer were strewn along about 100 feet of the roadway. There also were shredded pieces from the Chevrolet truck all along the crash scene.
This section of Hwy. 19 doesn't have a shoulder. Loose dirt and gravel a foot wide suddenly gives way to a 10-foot deep ditch littered with pine tree stumps from a recent timber harvest.

The accident is being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt in the accident.

Deadly Virginia pickup truck accident

A tragic motor vehicle accident out of Cana, Virginia, made headlines yesterday, when three teens were killed after the pickup truck they were riding in crashed.

My FOX 8 in Virginia reports that two of the teens who died were riding in the back of the truck, and one was in the cab. Three other teens in the vehicle sustained injuries and were treated at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

High speeds and a loss of control were reportedly factors in the truck accident, which happened on Sunday. The driver of the pickup truck was 15 years old and did not have a driver's license.

This sad truck accident is a reminder to parents to educate their children on proper use of motor vehicles, and to follow traffic rules to stay safe.

CSX train collides with tractor-trailer

The Clanton Advertiser reported a truck and train accident that occurred in Thorsby in mid-June. The truck was sitting on railroad tracks when a CSX train crashed into it at around 10:30 a.m.

As it turned out, the tractor-trailer was attempting to turn, but did not see the train coming until too late. The crash has raised concern about train crossing safety in the area. The article reports that the accident makes the 11th train crash in Thorsby and the 5th in the county in less than a year.

The incident comes one week after various local, state and federal officials met with CSX to discuss a plan to improve safety at 16 crossings from Clanton to Jemison including this one at County Road 623. According to the plans, this crossing would have been closed, and an access road would have been built to another crossing with lights and gates.
