Fairhope Woman Injured in Car Accident

A 53-year-old business woman from Fairhope was injured in a car accident on Wednesday morning. Her injuries were very serious and she was taken by medical helicopter to University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile for treatment. Her daughter was also in the car and her injuries were not serious.

The woman

was heading west on Gayfer Avenue at 10:56 a.m., and was going through the Greeno Road intersection on a green light, when her 1997 Ford Taurus was struck by a northbound 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser

Her car then hit a pickup truck. It is unknown why the driver of the Land Cruiser ran a red light. The police are investigating and they do not believe that alcohol was a factor.

Auburn Car Accident Injures Two

Two people were injured, one seriously, in a single-car accident in Auburn late Monday. The accident happened on Webster Road near an embankment. The car overturned and slid down the embankment.

The vehicle

had left the road while traveling between Pumphrey Avenue and Bellwood Place and struck a utility pole, according to Capt. Tom Stofer of the Auburn Police Division.

The driver of the car had to be airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center. His injuries were believed to be life-threatening. There was a passenger in the car that was also injured. That person was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The condition of the passenger is unknown. The car accident is being investigated and it is unknown why it occured.

Bethesda Car Accident Kills Teenage

An 18-year-old driver was killed after driving his car into a tree. The car accident happened early on Saturday morning. It is unknown why he lost control of the vehicle.

The victim

was traveling westbound on Bradley Boulevard toward Wilson Lane. When he approached Brite Drive police say he lost control of his 2001 Jaguar and struck a tree.

The car was found in a yard of a home on the street. The victim was found dead on the scene of the accident. No one else was involved in the accident. The Montgomery County Police are investigating the car accident.

Car Accident Kills Man at Calhoun College

A man was killed in a car accident that ended on the lawn at Calhoun Community College. The victim was from Decatur and was driving his car on Highway 31 early Thursday morning. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

They say he crossed both southbound lanes, hit the ditch in the middle of the road, and the car started to flip over.
Then the car continued to cross the northbound lanes before landing upright on the front lawn of Calhoun College.

It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt but he was ejected from the vehicle. He was killed instantly. The Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident.

Bicyclist Hurt in Montgomery Car Accident

A 52-year-old man was severly injured in a bicycle accident in Montgomery on Tuesday. He was struck by a car on U.S. Highway 31. The victim is from Letohatchee. He was airlifted from the scene of the accident to Baptist South Hospital.

Several agencies responded to the scene including the Pintlala Fire Department, State Troopers and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

It is unknown what caused the accident and why the car struck the man on his bike. The Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident. No charges have been filed.

Athens Car Accident Kills Person

A car accident in Athens, Alabama killed one person and injured two others on Christmas Day. The two-car crash happened on U.S. 72 and one of the cars caught on fire. The victim's body could not be recognized.

Limestone County Coroner Mike West said Tuesday that traffic-homicide investigators did find identification in the deceased driver's 1991 Buick, but authorities would not release a name until the death could be properly confirmed.
"We're trying to get hold of dental records to see if they match," West said.

The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were both injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital to be treated for their injuries. The driver was seriously injured. The cause of the car accident is not known and the police are still investigating.

Man Injured in Montgomery Car Crash

An unidentified man was hurt in a car accident on a Montgomery highway earlier today. He was driving a car on Interstate 370 in Montgomery County. He drove off the road and hit a tractor that was parked in the grass.

The car struck a grass-cutting tractor, which was unoccupied, and caught fire, according to John McDonough, a spokesman for Maryland State Police. Grass and brush also caught fire, and both the car and the tractor were completely burned and crushed, according to fire officials.

The man was pulled from his burning car by a good samaritan. The extent of the driver's injuries are unknown. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The fire was extinguished by the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and the interstate was reopened to traffic. There were no other injuries in the accident.

Focus on teen driver safety

The statistics for teen drivers are staggering: motor vehicle crashes comprise 36 percent of all deaths for teens, amounting to more than 6,000 dead teens each year on our nation's roads.

Congress has addressed this serious issue with National Teen Driver Safety Week, meant to bring to the forefront the dangers of teen driving and curb the problem. With so many distractions for teens, including cell phones, text messaging, iPods and more, it's no wonder there are so many accidents.

The states that top the list for auto-related deaths of young people are California, Texas and Florida. Many law enforcement officials and schools are starting programs to help educate teens on the dangers of certain behaviors on the roads.

An article from FloridaToday.com, offers advice to parents:

But most experts say a parent, not a police officer, lecturer or driving instructor, will have the most influence on a young driver's safe driving habits.
"Parents have these choices, too," Rubiella said. "Kids are implementing the skills and knowledge they learn at home. If you are on the phone while driving, they are on the phone. If you are speeding, they will, too."

Girl Dies in Mine Shaft ATV Accident

A 13-year-old Rikki Howard and her 10-year-old half-sister Casie Hicks were riding on the rolling hills of Arizona in a three-wheeled ATV and were seriously injured Saturday in an ATV accident, when their vehicle suddenly tore down a 125-foot mine shaft. The Arizona hilly countryside apparently obscured the opening to the mineshaft, and the girls' vehicle fell right into it.

According to media reports, the girls were found in the abandoned mine shaft once one of them responded to their father's shouting. One of the sisters tragically did not survive the fall.

The two girls were missing for approximately twelve hours before a search was initiated. According to Arizona authorities, Casie Hicks was flown to nearby University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where she remains in critical condition.

Car accident claims life of man without seatbelt

A deadly, two-car accident in Mississippi yesterday claimed the life of an Alabama man who was not wearing his seatbelt.

The Mississippi Press reports on the motor vehicle accident, which occurred on the U.S. 90 bridge in Pascagoula, and involved a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Tacoma. The report says the man driving the Tacoma hit the Camry from behind, causing the fatal accident. The Tacoma flipped and the man was ejected and killed instantly. The Camry, carrying a mother and her 11-month-old baby, spun into the center lane divider on the bridge. Both the mother and daughter were treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.

State troopers are investigating to see if alcohol or drugs were involved in the tragic accident.
