The Sand Mountain Reporter published an article about a deadly motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a local high school student on Friday.

The 15-year-old victim was driving a 2005 Honda motorcycle on DeKalb County Road 9 and crashed into a 1992 Ford Taurus. The story does not provide details of how the accident occurred or road conditions.

The story, however, is a sad reminder of the dangers of motorcycle accidents on our nation's roadways. Though motorcyclists only comprise 2% of drivers, they make up about 8% of motor vehicle accident casualties each year. This means that a motorcyclist is 16 times more likely to die in a collision than someone in a car.
