Motorcycle death prompts safety campaign

The recent death of Fort Rucker's Warrant Officer 1 Michael Boykin from a motorcycle accident has prompted the military base to implement a motorcycle safety awareness campaign. An article on MontgomeryAdvertiser.com details the program, its goals and success among military personnel.

Fort Rucker officials say that many soldiers have an extracurricular interest in riding motorcycles, and some are not fully aware of the dangers involved in riding these two-wheeled vehicles. The military has decided to help these soldiers protect themselves on the road by providing a safety training program with professional instructors.

While personnel are not required to get a civilian motorcycle license in Alabama, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course is mandatory for all troops who wish to ride on military installations. If taken at a military site, the course fee is waived. Off base, the 16-hour course can cost as much as $205.

First Sgt. Patrick Porter, a motorcycle rider for 20 years, said the class has helped him immensely.

"There are no training wheels with motorcycles," Porter said. "If you don't go to a professional, skilled instructor, you're putting your life in danger."
