Kentucky train crash causes explosion, damage

Just south of Louisville, in Bullitt County, yesterday, a train derailed, causing a major explosion and chemical fire. This is the second Kentucky train derailment in two days to cause a fire and extensive damage.

Kentucky authorities closed a portion of nearby I-65 and evacuated homes, businesses and schools in the area.

"We've got several chemicals there and to our knowledge that's an irritant whether it's inhaled or direct irritant to the individuals out there and that's the reason for evacuation," Governor Ernie Fletcher said.

The CSX spokesman said the train consisted of four locomotives and 80 cars headed from Birmingham, Alabama to Louisville. He said 41cars were loaded with freight, the rest were empty.

Another train crash in Central Kentucky occurred on Monday, causing another chemical fire and evacuations.
