Should drug makers disclose doctors on payroll?

An article from WorstPills.org's press room (http://www.citizen.org/pressroom/release.cfm?ID=2467) details the testimony of a physician before a Senate Commitee. Dr. Peter Lurie argued that Federal Law should mandate pharmaceutical companies to make their payments to doctors public knowledge.

"Current state laws that require the disclosure of pharmaceutical company payments to physicians are inadequate and a strong national disclosure law is needed, Public Citizen testified before Congress today. Dr. Peter Lurie, deputy director of the Health Research Group at Public Citizen, addressed the Senate Special Committee on Aging during a hearing entitled "Paid to Prescribe? Exploring the Relationship Between Doctors and the Drug Industry.""

Some fear that a failure to enforce this policy will result in drug companies using money instead of science to influence the way their products are marketed to consumers. This could ultimately result in injury or death to consumers who use defective drugs.
