Hernia repair patch maker sued over defects

Davol, Inc. of Rhode Island is being sued over claimed defects and severe bowel problems a patient experienced as a result of the manufacturer's Composix Kugel Mesh Patch. The plaintiff claims that the patch failed and adhered to his bowels, resulting in severe abdominal pain and bowel dissection surgery.

Kugel Mesh Patches, a medical device employed in many hernia repair surgeries, was recalled under an FDA Class I recall in 2005. This was issued because the product was thought to be potentially life-threatening or a serious risk to patients. Then in 2006, the Composix Kugel Patch, the patch that the plaintiff had inserted during his hernia surgery, was also recalled.
