GlaxoSmithKline to settle over Paxil lawsuits

A judge said this week he plans to approve a $64 million settlement between GlaxoSmithKline and parents of minors who took the defective drug without knowing the possible side effects, including suicidal thoughts and withdrawal symptoms, among others.

The plaintiffs of the class action lawsuit against the second largest drug maker in the world claim that the company did not adequately warn parents of the dangers for minors to take Paxil, a drug that was once called a cure for teen depression.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that:

Sales of Paxil specifically for minors totaled more than $500 million. GlaxoSmithKline has repeatedly been accused of not revealing all that it knew about the drug, and the Food and Drug Administration has recommended against giving it to minors after some studies showed it increased suicidal tendencies in young people.
