The May 2007 New England Journal of Medicine published a sudy on the possible risks of using Avandia, a popular type 2 diabetes drug.

Widely prescribed by physicians, Avandia (generic name rosiglitazone) has been linked with heart attack and heart failure, according to the study.

An article from WorstPills.org (http://www.worstpills.org/member/newsletter.cfm?n_id=538) details the findings:

"These new findings linking AVANDIA to heart attacks strengthen the case that the drug should not be on the market," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Health Research Group at Public Citizen.

Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA published a warning to consumers of the dangers of serious cardiovascular events associated with use of Avandia and rosiglitazone.
