Avandia scare worries diabetes patients

A story from Savannah/Hilton Head's channel 3 WSAV says a man who has been taking Avandia for four years fears the drug has worsened his heart condition and risk for heart attack.

The recent report published in medical journal detailing the increased heart attack risks associated with use of Avandia, a popular medication for patients with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

The study showed that patients may have a 45% higher risk for heart attack than those not taking the drug. Of those who had heart attacks while using Avandia, 65% died as a result.

Glaxo-Smith Kline makes Avandia and says it is just as safe as other diabetes medications. Studies posted on the company's website show they knew about the risk for heart problems last summer even including a warning on a package insert.
