Mertz Fresh, in conjunction with the FDA, is recalling bagged spinach because of a positive test for salmonella in some of the products during a routine company test.

The spinach is distributed under the label Mertz Fresh, in both retail and food service packages. These include 10 and 16 oz bags as well as 4-2.5 lb. and 4 lb. cartons. The only Mertz Fresh product affected is spinach that bears the tracking codes 12208114, 12208214 and 12208314. It was distributed in the continental United States and Canada

The products that tested positive came during a test that the company preforms on all its products. Mertz Fresh has already located the affected spinach and put holds on it. The spinach won't be release to retail grocers and stores.

The test was only positive for one sample of many on three packing lines, but the company decided to recall all the spinach that was packaged that day from that field lot as a precautionary measure. As of now, there have been no illnesses reported to the company.

Salmonellosis exhibits flu-like symptoms including, but not limited to, diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Symptoms usually begin 12-72 hours after infection, and typically last 4-7 days.
