Dole Foods Announces Bagged Salads Recall in E. Coli Scare

Dole Food has recalled certain bagged salads sold in the U.S. and Canada due to samples that tested positive for E. coli bacteria. E. coli is a common form of bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning in people subjected to certain strains of the bacteria. Normally E. coli flourishes when perishable food is left at higher temperatures without the benefit of refrigeration.

Dole has augmented efforts to contravene E. coli outbreaks as a result of Dole's bagged spinach problems last year in which E. coli caused food poisoning in several hundred consumers and three people died. Earlier this month, similar problems plagued Metz Fresh, another California grower. Metz Fresh bagged spinach was recalled after a positive test for salmonella. That recall affected nearly 8,000 cases of spinach.
