The latest report, this time from New Zealand, on defective products made in China is that infant's and children's clothing may contain dangerous levels of the chemical formaldehyde, which is known to cause skin and eye irritations, respiratory difficulties, asthma and even cancer.

This news and that of the recent, widespread toy recalls affecting huge companies like Mattel and Fisher Price, has pushed consumers toward the purchase of more American products. Organic baby products sold by independent retailers and major retailers like Target are also gaining popularity.

One story from KansasCity.com reports that 44% of all product safety recalls last year were products made in China and Hong Kong.

Be on the lookout for more product recalls ahead, from toys to clothing.
