A motor vehicle accident involving a van colliding with a school bus in Athens, Alabama, left the van driver dead and a van passenger severely injured. The bus driver and a seven-year-old boy on the bus suffered minor injuries.

According to a WAFF 48 News report, the bus was traveling west as the van was traveling south and the two collided, possibly as a result of the van's failure to stop.

WAFF 48 News also reports that the intersection where this accident occurred is a dangerous one, and construction in the area has caused more cars to detour through it. There have been at least 10 traffic accidents in the area since the construction began on a nearby bridge.

This incident and many others like it point to an increase in motor vehicle accidents in construction zones, and how state and local governments are dealing with the problem. Some states, such as New York, have increased fines for those found liable for accidents in construction zones.
