Alabama accidents plague holiday weekend

Another fatal accident claimed the life of a young mother and spared her one-year-old son Saturday night, a report from the Southeast Sun said. About six miles south of Enterprise on County Road 636, a 25-year-old mother hit a culvert, overturning her 1998 Nissan.

Another accident last weekend involved a 1990 Ford truck and a 2007 Honda three miles west of Enterprise on Alabama 134.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety, 19 people died on Alabama roads last Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and it was predicted that the number could be just as high for last weekend. Alabama State Troopers launched operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) this year.

"Use of safety restraints, seatbelts and child restraints, is one of the simplest and most important actions drivers and passengers can take," said Public Safety Director Col. W.M. Coppage.

Troopers are urging holiday travelers to always wear seatbelts, drive defensively by expecting the unexpected, and never drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

"Obey the law, avoid a ticket, and give yourself every chance of survival by buckling up," said Coppage.
